Buying Assistant job in Southampton

Job Description


We are recruiting for a Buying Assistant to work with our Engineering and Finance Teams to facilitate and improve the buying/purchasing process. This is a brand new role, and therefore we require a self motivated individual who has experience within a similar buying role with a passion for success and a willingness to progress within the business in the future and help set direction for this new function.

Key Responsibilities

In this brand new role reporting to the Finance Manager, you will provide purchasing administration support to the Engineering Teams across multiple projects and there will be considerable scope for the successful candidate to determine functional priorities within the following remit of responsibilities:

  • Identify and reconcile parts requirements for projects from BOMs
  • Preparation of purchase requisitions
  • Review of quotations and of issue purchase orders along with engineering drawings and product specifications
  • Day to day purchasing of both proprietary and manufactured components
  • Progressing of purchase orders including liaising with the Engineering Team to ensure purchasing schedules meet project requirements
  • Responsibility for  Goods-In and Stock Control
  • Resolve any supplier issues and develop relationships with existing and new suppliers
  • Revision, development and implementation of purchasing policy and purchasing systems

For the right candidate this role has the opportunity to evolve and gain a broader purchasing remit in the future

Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications

This is a challenging position that requires an enthusiastic team player who is calm under pressure with a clear understanding of the timescale pressures that are frequently placed on Engineering Projects Teams. You will be a key player in ensuring that project schedules are met.

You will be expected to have excellent communication and negotiating skills and a proven ability to prioritise workloads to meet business needs. The right candidate will be educated to at least A Level with previous experience in a buying role ideally in an engineering or technical manufacturing business.

Good all round IT skills and proficiency in MS Office Products is essential, along with a sound knowledge of purchasing software and systems.


£20,000-£25,000 per annum (negotiable depending on experience). In addition to a competitive salary ICS offer employees paid overtime an annual profit related bonus scheme, pension scheme and life cover.
